“Confused and disturbed, Mary tried to think what the angel could mean.” — Luke 1:29
Christmas often looks peaceful in our decorations and traditions, but the first Christmas was anything but calm. When the angel appeared, Mary wasn’t glowing with certainty—she was confused and disturbed. Her life was suddenly interrupted by a God who does not fit neatly into anyone’s plans.
Christmas reminds us that God doesn’t always enter quietly.
Sometimes He breaks into our lives in ways we didn’t expect—and would never have chosen. Yet His disruptions are always rooted in love. Mary’s world was turned upside down, but through her surrender—“I am the Lord’s servant”—God brought hope to the world.
In the same way, God may break our expectations to give us something better.
He may unsettle our routines, challenge our assumptions, or call us into unfamiliar places. Not to harm us, but to lead us into His life-giving purposes.
And the heart of Christmas is this:
God comes close.
Not as a distant spirit, but as a child—fragile, physical, fully human. Jesus stepped into every part of our experience so He could walk with us in every part of our lives.
When God breaks things, He breaks what cannot save us so He can give us what will.
Prayer:
Jesus, when You enter my life in ways I don’t expect, help me trust Your goodness. Break what needs breaking, heal what needs healing, and lead me into the life You are preparing for me. Amen.
