The Strength of Dependence: Learning to Abide in Jesus

Peter stepped out of the boat because Jesus said, “Come.”

For a moment, the impossible held. The water carried him. The storm was still there, but so was Jesus. Then Peter saw the wind, became afraid, and began to sink.

Many of us know that feeling. We begin by trusting Jesus, but somewhere along the way trust becomes management. We start measuring the waves, calculating the risk, and carrying the weight ourselves.

But the Christian life was never meant to be powered by self-sufficiency.

Jesus says, “Apart from me you can do nothing.” The branch does not create its own life. It abides in the vine. It receives. It remains. It stays close.

Paul learned the same truth when the Lord told him, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Strength, in the way of Jesus, is not pretending we are enough. Strength is learning to depend on the One who is.

The grace of Jesus is not a small encouragement added to our effort. Grace is Jesus Himself—near, present, sustaining, forgiving, and enough.

So today, the invitation is simple:

Stop trying to hold everything together by your own strength.

Remain in His love.

Dependence on Jesus is not failure.

It is where real strength begins.
