“Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.”
—Philippians 2:6–8 (NLT)
Devotional Thought
Rome defined greatness as victory parades, golden chariots, and conquered enemies in chains. Power was celebrated with honor and glory.
But in the upper room, Jesus redefined greatness. He rose from the table, took a towel, and washed His disciples’ feet. The King of kings stooped low—even for Judas and Peter.
This is humility: power under control.
Jesus showed us that humility is not weakness but strength used in service. It is the security of knowing who you are before God and choosing to bend low for the sake of love.
Pride demands admiration. Humility makes love safe and believable.
Reflection Questions
- Where do I still measure greatness the way the world does?
- What act of humble service is God calling me to today?
- How can I use my strengths to lift others up instead of myself?
