When Power Stands Silent: A Holy Week Meditation on the Silence of Jesus

When Power Stands Silent

“But Jesus made no response to any of the charges, much to the governor’s surprise.”
Matthew 27:14 (NLT)

Have you ever noticed how silence can be louder than words?

During Holy Week, we walk with Jesus toward the cross. We remember His miracles, His teachings, and His love. But one moment stands apart—the moment when He said nothing.

Before Pontius Pilate, Jesus stood accused. Lies were shouted. Anger filled the air. The crowd demanded blood. Pilate offered Jesus a chance to defend Himself. But Jesus, the Son of God, said nothing.

Why?

Not because He was powerless—but because He was purposeful.

This silence wasn’t defeat—it was divine restraint. Jesus wasn’t caught in a political trap. He had the authority to walk away. He had the wisdom to argue His innocence. He had the power to call down angels.

But He chose silence… so He could choose the cross.

“He was oppressed and treated harshly, yet he never said a word.”
Isaiah 53:7 (NLT)

In a world obsessed with control, noise, and defending ourselves, Jesus redefined power. His strength was not in retaliation—but in redemption. His glory was not in saving Himself—but in saving us.

Even Pilate was stunned.

“Don’t you realize I have the power to release you or crucify you?”
John 19:10 (NLT)
“You would have no power over me at all unless it were given to you from above.”
John 19:11 (NLT)

What do we learn from the silence of Jesus?
We learn that real power doesn’t need to shout.
We learn that God’s plan is often fulfilled not in dominance, but in surrender.
We learn that love is louder than fear—and the cross is greater than any crown.

And we learn that sometimes, the most faithful thing we can do… is to be still and trust the Father.
